First Tokyo Olympic gold medal for young Chinese shooter Yang Qian

Young Chinese shooter Yang Qian won the first gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics on July 24 with a victory in the women’s 10m air rifle shooting event.

Russian shooter Anastasiia Galachina won silver and Swiss Nina Christen won bronze.

Yang Qian, who was sixth in qualifying, scored 251.8 points in the final, beating Anastasiia Galachina’s 251.1 points to give the Chinese team a good start in the postponed Tokyo Olympics.

With only 0.1 point ahead of the last two shots, Yang Qian saw the gap widen despite a 10.7 point shot, while her rival put in an impressive 10.8.

However, in the last shot that was to designate the future champion, Anastasiia Galachina surprisingly obtained only 8.9 points and conceded the Olympic title to the young Chinese, who obtained a score of 9.8.
