In the NBA or in the French team, Timothé Luwawu-Cabarrot has distinguished himself in recent years in a role of luxury joker, able to bring both sides of the floor at a moment’s notice. The French player was thus useful in this role last season with the Nets (before being left on the bench in the playoffs), then in the French team during the Olympic Games. And it is to fulfill this mission that the Hawks recruited him during the offseason.
« He’s been there before », recalled Chris Jent, who has temporarily replaced Nate McMillan as head coach. “He’s part of building the squad and he’s one of those players that GM Travis Schlenk went looking for to put together this group. Because in an NBA season you need these guys. He’s played in the playoffs, he’s also started a lot of games, and he’s doing a great job. On both sides of the pitch, I think he’s fantastic ”.
« I liked the way they played last year, the way they won the series in Philadelphia »
It is an understatement to say that « TLC » had to show patience since the beginning of the season, in a team with an established hierarchy and which is distinguished by a high density. Until early December, when the combined forfeits of Bogdan Bogdanovic, Cam Reddish and De’Andre Hunter propelled him into the major five for three games.
Now it’s up to him to take advantage of this little window to show what he can bring.
“I liked the way they played last year, the way they won the series in Philadelphia, with all the energy they had and also the young players. I knew there was an opportunity for me to join the team and maybe have a window at some point, although I also know that I can help this team win games ”, he said in particular.
After a rather positive first which ended in a victory in Indiana (8 points, 3 rebounds in 25 minutes), then a more complicated second game against his former team from Philadelphia (0 point in 18 minutes and a loss to the ‘arrival), the Hawks staff reiterated their confidence in him by giving him 39 minutes last night against Charlotte, the third highest playing time of his entire career in an NBA game.
“All the little things TLC does add up. It’s basketball that wins matches ”
The victory was not at the end, but « TLC » this time was able to give a good idea of what he could bring, by doing a little of everything (12 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks) .
« It’s an additional rotation, which plays altruistically, which plays hard, for the team », for his part slipped his teammate John Collins. “He gives his all on the defensive plan. It might not spark off on offense, but all the little things TLC does, add up. It’s basketball that wins matches ”.
Timothé Luwawu-Cabarrot must convince the staff, enough so that once the infirmary has emptied, we continue to call on him and that he can see the field more regularly. It’s a bit of a summary of his career so far, but he thinks he can fit into the identity of the Hawks.
“I think we have an identity. We know who we are. It may not yet be fully affirmed, but we know who we are ”, he concluded.
