Extending Kyle Busch, a priority for Joe Gibbs

The future of Kyle Busch in the NASCAR Cup Series is still unclear, but extending it is a priority for his boss Joe Gibbs, who says he is surprised by the absence of an extension to date.

Will stay or go? The future of Kyle Busch is causing a lot of talk, especially since the two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion lit a new fuse in Loudon on Saturday by indicating that he was talking to other teams, including Stewart-Haas Racing.

It was enough for Joe Gibbs Racing to try to put out the fire. It was the owner himself, Joe Gibbs, who at a press conference after Christopher Bell’s victory, went up in front to say that extending Kyle Busch was a priority.

Joe Gibbs Racing, which has to face the departure of the Mars Incorporated group at the end of the season, is looking for one or more sponsors for the driver of the Toyota Camry n°18. As long as no sponsor will be signed, the extension of Kyle Busch cannot be done.

We are working very hard to try to get things done and it is difficult. You have to put a lot of things in place to make things work and we are working as hard as we can. We are pursuing different avenues. So yes, I am surprised that at this stage of the season we have not been able to complete this file.

Arrived at Joe Gibbs Racing in 2008 from Joe Gibbs Racing, Kyle Busch has won 56 of the 60 NASCAR Cup Series victories there and his two championship titles in the premier class. He is more than ever associated with the Mars group and in particular with its M&M’s brand.

Traditionally, Joe Gibbs Racing does not wait for the last year of its drivers’ contract to renew the contract. However, the departure of the Mars group changed the situation. The team is now looking for a sponsor to finance car number 18 and the salary of Kyle Busch.

According to Dave Alpern, president of Joe Gibbs Racing, Kyle Busch’s contract extension and the announcement of a new sponsor for the #18 Toyota Camry will go hand-in-hand.
