The 2022 edition of the African Football Supercup will be 100% Moroccan, with an unprecedented duel on the national and continental levels, between Wydad de Casablanca (WAC), trying for the Champions League and Renaissance de Berkane (RSB), winner of the CAF Cup, Saturday at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex.
The Reds will compete for this trophy after winning their third Champions League title, at the expense of Al-Ahly of Cairo (2-0), while the Oranges won their second CAF Cup by beating the South Africans of ‘Orlando Pirates (5-4 on pens, 1-1 after extra time), in the final played in Nigeria.
For observers, this duel will not be within reach for the two protagonists who leave with equal chances, especially since the two teams know each other very well for having already crossed swords in the national championship or in the Throne Cup.
We thus expect a game that would be played on details and that must be approached with appropriate tactics that will allow you to dominate the game and exploit the slightest flaw to make the difference.
Under the leadership of its new coach Houssine Ammouta, the WAC aims to win this trophy for the second time in its history, after that of 2017, won at the expense of TP Mazembe 1-0 (CAF Cup), while the Berkanis played it in 2021 (defeat against Al-Ahly 2-0).
In this regard, Ammouta is optimistic about a Supercup victory against RSB, believing that this meeting will improve the competitiveness of his team.
In statements to the press, at the end of the championship match against Difaa of El Jadida, Ammouta said he was proud to see two Moroccan teams compete for this trophy, which will expand the Moroccan football record regardless of the result.
For his part, Abdelhak Benchikha believes that this meeting is open to all forecasts and that the two parties start it with equal chances.
« Of course, we respect Wydad and its supporters, but we have the motivation and the ambition to win this title », he said after the last league match against AS FAR, adding that the team who will show serenity and concentration will have a better chance of winning.
This meeting promises another spectacle on the bleachers, with supporters who will contribute to this celebration of African football which illustrates the development of the national football, both at club level and at national level.
This meeting will be officiated by the Algerian referee Mustapha Ghorbal. He will be assisted by his compatriots Abdelhak Etchiali and Mokrane Gourari.
