Evander Kane will have to be absent for three or four months

Evander Kane will be out for three to four months, the Edmonton Oilers announced Wednesday.

The forward left the ice quickly after sustaining a severe cut to his left wrist in the second period of the game against the Tampa Bay Lightning at Amalie Arena on Tuesday.

The Oilers said after the game that Kane was in stable condition and had been taken to hospital for surgery.

On Wednesday morning, Kane wrote on Twitter that he was « on the road to recovery. »

“Thank you all for the wishes and prayers you have sent to me over the past few hours,” he wrote. What happened last night was obviously extremely disturbing to me, and I’m still a bit in shock. I would like to thank all of the medical staff at the Edmonton Oilers and the Tampa Bay Lightning, as well as the doctors and paramedics who rushed to treat my injury. Without you, I know things could have been so much worse, and for that I will be forever grateful. I won’t be back for the next game, but I will be back, and I’m already looking forward to getting back on the ice to play the sport I love with my teammates in front of our wonderful fans. »

Kane fell to the ice after colliding with the Lightning defenseman Philip Myersand the Lightning forward Pat Maroon accidentally put his skate on his wrist. Kane quickly grabbed his arm to put pressure on the cut.

“I hope he will be okay. When you see that much blood on the ice, you know there’s something wrong,” Maroon said. All the guys were really worried about him. It was scary. You don’t wish that on any player in the league. »

The 31-year-old striker immediately headed to his bench and then to the locker room where he was accompanied by his team’s medical staff.

« Suddenly he was skating faster than I’ve ever seen him and I’ve never seen anyone with such big eyes, » the captain said. Connor McDavid. We immediately understood that it was serious, and how scared he was. We were all worried about him. You never want to see that happen. »

Kane has 13 points (five goals, eight assists) in 13 games this season. He signed a four-year, $20.5 million contract with the Oilers last offseason.

« Everyone on our team and our organization, as well as most people in Edmonton, have a thought for Evander Kane, Oilers coach Jay Woodcroft said. When an accident like this happens on the ice, it’s the first thing that comes to mind. I want to highlight the work of our excellent medical staff, and the people present in the arena who reacted quickly. »

The Oilers recalled forwards Mattias Janmark and Klim Kostin from their American Hockey League affiliate Bakersfield on Wednesday.

« I’m just happy he’s okay, » the striker said. Ryan Nugent Hopkins. It was a really worrying situation. I don’t want to talk too much about it, but it was really scary. »
