Euro football: clashes, insults … too much tension among the Blues during the competition

The solidarity and group spirit that had allowed France to become world champion in 2018 disappeared during Euro 2021. Tensions between the players, on and off the field, weighed down the performance of the Blues.

After the disappointing elimination of the Blues at Euro football, it is time for questions. Bad tactical choices, difficult conditions, too physical training, deleterious atmosphere between the players … How the Habs, yet favorites of the competition, were able to collapse in just ten minutes against Switzerland to be finally eliminated in the round of 16 ? « We must make a lucid analysis of what did not stick », indicated Noël Le Graët in Football TV Sunday July 4.

The Parisian reveals for its part the tensions that enamelled the France group throughout the competition. The glue that had made the strength of the team during the last World Cup has disappeared. The Ile-de-France daily thus evokes « problems of affinity between generations and little link between the players ».

A clash between Pavard and Pogba

Disagreements that were even mentioned publicly by the Blues during their speeches to the press. This was the case for example of Kylian Mbappé, annoyed by the criticisms of his teammate Olivier Giroud after the preparation match against Bulgaria. The PSG striker also reaffirmed that no instructions for taking penalties had been given by Didier Deschamps, contrary to Antoine Griezmann’s statements.

« Settling of scores » in public which had never taken place in the past with the Blues of Didier Deschamps. The Parisian also reveals a clash that occurred during the meeting against Switzerland, between Raphaël Varane, Benjamin Pavard and Paul Pogba. The latter would not have appreciated the reproaches of the defender of Munich and would have hung with him on the lawn.

« We must not throw away everything that has been done »

Pogba who attacks his coach before extra time, Coman who refuses to go out on injury, or even the families of players who shout in the stands. There are many examples of frustration. According to many sources, the isolation of the players in an impersonal hotel, the hot weather, the departure of Ousmane Dembélé and the impossibility of seeing relatives have strongly impacted the morale of internationals.

But for Noël Le Graët, « we must not throw away everything that has been done. On the contrary, we have young players with a lot of qualities. We have a coach who has enormous qualities ». The group must now look to the next World Cup with the desire to defend the title of 2018.
