The 2022-23 campaign has produced some of the biggest transfers of all time, but which players have shone brightest?
As the curtain is set to fall on another exciting year in European football, it’s time to look back at the players who have made the most impact after making high-profile transfers. The Premier League dominated the market, with over £2bn spent on new players from the top 20 English clubs, but big deals were also done in Italy, Spain, Germany, France and elsewhere.
But money is not always a guarantee of success. Chelsea have invested more in new players than any other club on the continent, but they will not play in Europe next season after plummeting to the bottom half of the Premier League table.
Some of the year’s most expensive rookies flourished, but a slew of cut-price deals turned out to be bargains, and free agents were a big help, too. National champions Manchester City, Napoli and Barcelona can attest to that.
