English League president assures League Cup not in jeopardy
The reform of the 2024-2025 Champions League and its expansion to 36 teams should not threaten the existence of the English League Cup, despite the concern of several English observers. Indeed, this new version of the C1 would require more match slots in the middle of the week in the pre-Christmas period, slots generally allocated to the League Cup.
» We are realistic, we know that 2024 is coming. UEFA don’t like League Cups in generalexplained the chairman of the English Football League Nick Parry to the BBC. I don’t think the future of the competition is threatened. But we’re going to have to look at the timeline. To wonder, for example, if we should consider semi-finals in a single match, if we should look more specifically at the case of teams engaged in European competition ”.
In 2020, UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin suggested that the League Cups be scrapped to avoid congestion in the European calendar.
