Endurance – WEC: A grid with 39 crews for the 2022 season

Notably marked by the return of Peugeot, the 2022 season of the world endurance championship will see 39 teams compete in the seven rounds scheduled on the calendar, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The WEC is thinking big for its 10th season. While the kick-off will be given with the prologue, two days of testing at Sebring on March 12 and 13, a week before a 1,000-mile race on the Florida track, the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) and the Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO) lifted the veil on Wednesday on the teams that will participate in the entire season. A grid that will be more important than ever with no less than 39 teams competing in the four categories. In Hypercar, Toyota will enter two GR010 Hybrids with unchanged crews apart from the replacement of Kazuki Nakajima by Ryo Hirakawa on number 8. With its modified LMP1 prototype, Alpine will once again be there to prepare for the arrival of its new machine in 2024 when Glickenhaus, for the second season of his 007 LMH, only entered the year with the one flanked by the number 708, of which the French Olivier Pla will be one of the pilots. A list of entries that does not remove the greatest uncertainty of this season, the date of arrival of Peugeot. If the French manufacturer will enter two copies of his 9X8, bearing the numbers 93 and 94 with Paul di Resta at the wheel of one and Loïc Duval who will be in the seat of the other, the lion brand will only make its debut when its unconventional prototype, devoid of a rear spoiler, is ready.

Penske and Bourdais back

If the premier class will be limited to six entered while awaiting the arrival of many manufacturers in 2023 and 2024, the LMP2 will be the most represented with no less than fifteen prototypes at the start. Crews who will all have one thing in common, that of driving an Oreca 07 chassis. And, among the names of the teams selected is that of a well-known team in North America. While his collaboration with Porsche will not begin until next year, Team Penske will return to Le Mans 51 years after its only participation, then with a Ferrari 512M. For this, the American team will in particular trust Emmanuel Collard but also Dane Cameron and Felipe Nasr, who were recently appointed Porsche test drivers for its LMDh prototype. In the same idea, the Italian team AF Corse will enter a prototype in LMP2 in order to prepare its collaboration with Ferrari in Hypercar from 2023. Used to promotion formulas such as the F2 or the F3, the Prema team is taking the big leap in endurance and will be able to count on the experience of Robert Kubica while Sébastien Bourdais will return to the world championship. The driver from Le Mans joined the British Vector Sport team for the entire WEC season. In the LMGTE Pro category, the duel between Porsche and Ferrari will be refereed by Corvette, which will enter a C8R for the entire season. As for the LMGTE Am category, there will be no less than thirteen teams entered, including the team of American actor and endurance enthusiast Patrick Dempsey.
