On the Austin circuit in Texas, the drivers compete in their first road race of the season in the NASCAR Cup Series. This is the second race on this track for NASCAR’s premier division after the one contested last season in the rain. The officials had ended the race prematurely, because the water was not evacuating enough from the track and several serious accidents had punctuated this race.

Last year Chase Elliott won the seventh victory of his career on the road course, making him the third most successful driver on these tracks behind Tony Stewart with eight wins and leader Jeff Gordon with nine wins. If Tony Stewart and Jeff Gordon only won their victories on two tracks (Sonoma and Watkins Glen), the only two on the NASCAR calendar during their career, Chase Elliott has victories on five circuits, Watkins Glen, Charlotte, Daytona , Austin and Road America. On the other hand, he has still not found the keys to victory, neither in Sonoma nor in Indianapolis.

With four victories each, Kyle Busch and Martin Truex Jr. are the two most successful active drivers on road courses behind Chase Elliott.
