Mexico, the qualifications – This qualifying session for the Formula 1 Mexican Grand Prix got off to a bad start, with the crash of Lance Stroll, causing a long session interruption. Discover the summary as well as the full ranking.

Formula 1, qualifying: under the sun… of Mexico!

It started in Mexico City, with the qualifications for the 2021 Formula 1 Mexican Grand Prix. And it started badly, for the favorites of this session. Indeed, it seems that there is a problem with the rear fins of the two Red Bull Honda … Raikkonen signs the first mark, followed by Mazepin. And the star of the weekend is also on the track, here is Sergio Perez! Giovinazzi best time, ahead of his teammate. Then Sainz and finally, Leclerc, relayed him to the controls. Vettel P3, between Ferraris… and red flag! Throw Stroll into the wall! He comes out unscathed but given the damage to the protective walls, it could take a while, before the session is restarted.

At 9:33 p.m., the meeting resumed. That is to say not far from 25 minutes of interruption of the race… There will remain the trifle of 11 minutes for the pilots who have not yet signed a time, to register their name within the hierarchy. Logically, it’s the traffic jam, at the exit of the pit-lane. And again, one incident, Carlos Sainz’s Ferrari is idling. But after a reset, the Spaniard regains the use of his car. Until when ? Gasly new leader, beaten by Hamilton then Bottas, but with unimpressive laps.

Alonso by the wayside!

Max Verstappen should do better and more! 6 tenths better for Red Bull! And Norris between the two silver arrows. Then Perez takes second place. The Mercedes are relaunched, Valtteri P2 and Lewis P3. The reigning world champion is really not in the game… Leclerc is sixth, behind Norris and ahead of Ricciardo. Ocon P10, between the Alfa Romeos. Sergio improves again and sets the third fastest time. For the moment, Pierre Gasly is eighth. But the tricolor crosses the line under the checkered flag, P2! And Leclerc in the lead. Then Bottas!

The failures are therefore, in order, Alonso, Latifi, Schumacher, Mazepin and Stroll.

Mexico City, Q2, fatal to Vettel and Ocon

We’re back on the track for the second part of qualifying for the 2021 Formula 1 Mexican Grand Prix. And all the drivers are on medium tires. Sergio Perez will be the first top driver to record a timed lap. Then Verstappen easily beats his teammate. Bottas second ahead of Leclerc. But Hamilton took second place, at 0.016s. Would mediums be more suitable for Silver Arrows? Tsunoda P3! ais on soft tires… After this first salvo, Verstappen leads ahead of Hamilton, Tsunoda, Bottas, Leclerc, Perez, Ricciardo, Sainz, Gasly and Norris. Raikkonen, Giovinazzi, Ocon, Russell and Vettel are the unqualified. But there are more than 7 minutes left.

Three more minutes in this Q2 and the drivers hit the track again. Carlos is on a preparation lap. Lewis Hamilton new fastest time. Gasly fifth. Giovinazzi outside. But a priori, he did not type. Russell P13, ahead of Giovinazzi and Ocon. These three pilots are unqualified. Like Vettel and Raikkonen, in that order.

Formula 1: the Q3

Resumption of qualifying with Q3 of the Formula 1 Mexican GP. In the first sector, Ricciardo is the fastest. He signs the best provisional time. But he should fall quickly. Perez is the first to dislodge the Mclaren. Max is one tenth ahead of him. But it is Bottas who hits hard, with the provisional pole, more than 3 tenths ahead! Hamilton second to tenth, what a surprise! Verstappen P3 ahead of Perez, Gasly, Leclerc, Ricciardo, Sainz, Tsunoda and Norris. Knowing that these last two will be penalized on the grid.

Less than three minutes on the clock and the pilots set off again. Norris and Tsunoda will certainly offer some suction to Ricciardo and Gasly. What can offer almost three tenths of advantage, on this circuit. At Red Bull, Max is behind Sergio. Team strategy? Hard to imagine, on the land of the Mexican pilot… Sergio is launching! Valtteri the fastest in the T1 and Perez misses himself! Verstappen will not start on pole… Max fails in 3rd place. The pole is played at Mercedes. # 77 does not improve and neither does # 44! Mercedes double, pole position for Valtteri Bottas.
