Vesey was once a highly touted Harvard prospect. He started his career with seasons of 16, 17 and 17 goals with the New York Rangers, but his production has since plummeted. Most recently, he split the 2021 season between the Maple Leafs and the Canucks, scoring five goals and 10 points in 50 games.
Jankowski is a former Calgary Flames first-round pick. He seemed to have found a rhythm as a quality third-line center, scoring 17 and 14 goals for the Flames in 2017-18 and 2018-19, but, as with Vesey, his production has dwindled over the past two years. In 2021, Jankowski scored four goals and 11 points in 45 games for the Penguins.
Finally, there’s Wotherspoon, another former Flames draft pick. The big defenseman has appeared in 30 NHL games in four seasons with the Flames, but hasn’t played in the big leagues since 2016-17. He has spent his last four seasons in the AHL, playing with the Stockton Heat, San Antonio Rampage and Lehigh Valley Phantoms.
None of those players currently have contracts, but they can adjust to the Devils in their preseason games to make deals with the squad ahead of the 2021-22 season.
