Davis Cup. Croatia edge closer to quarters, Canada through . Sport

Last year’s Davis Cup runners-up Croatia took a big step towards the quarter-finals with a 3-0 win over Argentina on Saturday, while Canada qualified despite losing to Serbia (2-1).

Croatia, the unfortunate finalist of the 2021 edition against Russia, chained a second victory in a row after that against Sweden (2-1) on Thursday, beating Argentina 3-0, the surprise winner of the Cincinnati tournament. Borna Coric (26th) bringing the point of victory from the second single.

After a heavy inaugural defeat against Italy (3-0), Croatia was able to react despite the absence of Marin Cilic (16th in the world) to be very close to qualification, before Italy-Sweden on Sunday.

The day after its prestigious victory against Spain led by its new world number one Carlos Alcaraz, Canada assured him of his ticket to the quarterfinals despite his defeat (2-1) against Serbia.

Faller of Alcaraz the day before, Félix Augier-Aliassime (13th in the world), still in great shape, offered qualification to his team by dominating Miomir Kecmanovic (33rd) 6-3, 6-4. Canada is guaranteed to finish in the top two of Group B.

France eliminated

By winning the doubles due to the abandonment of a knee injury to Vasek Pospisil, Serbia won the match, and kept their chances of qualifying very slim. For that, it would take a victory for South Korea, already eliminated, against Spain on Sunday.

In Group C, the two qualifiers, Germany and Australia, were already known on Friday. In the duel between the last two of the group, it was France who emerged victorious (2-1) from Belgium, winning their first victory and taking third place in the group.

Both qualified for the quarterfinals, Germany and Australia face each other on Sunday to determine their final classification.

In Group D, the Netherlands, not the favorites of their group before the competition, finally finished in the lead after their victory against the United States (2-1) in the singles.

Both undefeated before this meeting, the two teams were already qualified: but the first place allows the Dutch to hope to face a more affordable opponent.
