Dakar: Shibalov winner in trucks, Peter Willemsen third


The Russian edged his team-mate and compatriot Eduard Nikolaev (Kamaz) by 1:37. The Dutch Martin van den Brink and Bernard Der Kinderen and their Belgian co-driver Peter Willemsen (Iveco) took third place at 4:25. Shibalov scored his first success in this Dakar. His team, Kamaz, has since the start finished at least in the first two places of each stage. Overall leader Dmitry Sotnikov finished fifth on Sunday, conceding 6:52. He keeps the lead with 5:14 on Nikolaev and 31:25 on Shibalov. The van den Brink / Der Kinderen / Willemsen trio are in seventh position at 1h59: 45.

Jan Van Der Vaet, co-driver of Dutchman Pascal De Baar (Renault) finished thirteenth on Sunday at 29:37.

In the light prototypes, the American Seth Quintero (OT3) notched his sixth victory in this Dakar. This time he edged Spain’s Cristina Gutierrez Herrero by 5:11 (OT3) and South African Mavel Lebedev (Can-Am) by 11:51. Fourth on the stage at 12:47, the Chilean Francisco Lopez Contardo (Can-Am) widened the gap in the overall standings, the Swede Sebastian Eriksson (Can-Am) losing more than an hour on Sunday. A 10-hour penalty compromised Quintero’s chances of victory.
