Dakar, discovering the profession of co-pilot with Mathieu Baumel

The profession of co-pilot in Rally Raid, essential and yet little known. To see more clearly we chose to follow the best of them, he is French, reigning world champion in the discipline… and for a year, we followed in the wake of Mathieu Baumel, the compass of the dunes of the Dakar.

It was therefore a month after the end of the Dakar 2022 that we had the opportunity to visit the playground of Qatari Driver Nasser Al Attiyah. its name Le Nasser Camp a private domain dedicated to motorsport to discover the absolute weapon of the Rally Raid.

And this Racing Prototype also has a very useful hidden accessory! Nasser after this little demonstration got behind the wheel of his Hillux T1+ and we have to admit that his passages are very very impressive.

Return to the Paris region to find Mathieu Baumel. The idea this time is to discover his office…. the tub to the right of Nasser Al Athiya. To take the measure of the Job of Copilot, nothing better than to take the place of the best of them.

We are now in Saudi Arabia to find Nasser Al Attiyah and Mathieu Baumel in the heat of the action. Cars, motorcycles, SSV quads and Trucks, there are 790 competitors taking part in the 45th edition of the Dakar. A Dakar which has just announced that only low-emission alternative energies will be used by 2030.

Crew number 200 is flying over the start of this Dakar 2023. While their rivals are experiencing quite a few breakages, Nasser Al Attiyah and Mathieu Baumel seem to be caressing the dunes. And settle comfortably at the top of the general classification.

The Bivouac is the time when men and mechanics are repaired… with some of the participants adopting small habits to optimize the chances of winning.

After tea, Mathieu gives us a tour of his mobile double bedroom. Every evening at 8 p.m. it’s always the same thing, the competitors all gather for the briefing… Nasser takes the opportunity to find his co-pilot there.
