On Tuesday’s episode of Daily face-to-face liveFrank Seravalli and Colby Cohen discuss Regina Pats phenom Connor Bedard and the teams that are in the race to select generational talent first overall in the upcoming 2023 NHL Draft.
Frank Seravalli: Let’s take a look at the Connor Bedard watch. What an afternoon it was for Bedard on Monday in Edmonton as his Regina Pats took on the Edmonton Oil Kings before the Oilers played Monday night – in the same building at Rogers Place. When you look at Colby, the game that Bedard managed to put together, a five-point afternoon, it’s absolutely insane.
Colby Cohen: Sounds like a guy over there who literally plays pond hockey in the Canadian Hockey League (CHL), Western Hockey League (WHL) which is a tough league. He’s just playing a different sport, a whole different game than the rest of the guys. I have to tell you that there are a lot of people who are excited about this young man. I see it all over the city of Chicago especially the hashtag #TankForBedard this season. Frank, when you see a clip like last night, it must excite a hockey fan.
Frank Seravalli: Yeah, hard not to get excited about something like that. But, I wanted to point out that a lot of the teams we were expecting to see in the draw race suddenly found themselves in this spot. The Anaheim Ducks are bottom of the pack with a .288 point percentage. Some of these teams between the Ducks and Flyers, like the Blackhawks, Coyotes and Flyers in particular, have had pretty decent starts to the year and have fallen back to earth. What is interesting to observe is the reaction of each of these fanbases. Maybe not so much in Columbus where they expected their team to be a bit better this season, same thing in Ottawa they expected this team to be a playoff team. I know in Philadelphia, living here, just like you see in Chicago, the fans are actually on board and supporting their teams for quality loss. Where the team looks pretty good, competes and ends up losing. Fans believe this is the best way forward for their franchise. Did this part surprise you a bit? Considering we expected this year to be pretty miserable in Chicago?
Colby Cohen: I give a lot of credit to the fanbase, I think it’s a smart band here. I think they’re coming to terms with the fact that the organization has been transparent about what’s going on they’re rebuilding the organization top to bottom we’re talking prospect pool, American League team, scouting staff , etc. it looks different. There’s definitely a group of Chicago fans who embrace the rebuilding and what’s going on. Ultimately, we’ll have to see how it plays out come draft time. I’ll tell you, it’s not just Bedard, Adam Fantilli also seems to be one of those franchise-changing players.
Frank Seravalli: Yeah, it’s a pretty deep draft heading into 2023. We’ve been watching it for a number of years and it’s getting closer, so we’re excited about that.
