Cubs rumors: Chicago has a back-up plan in mind for Trey Mancini

The Chicago Cubs would have targeted a first base option, and it’s not Trey Mancini.

The Chicago Cubs made some big moves this offseason to help the team get back into the competition. They signed shortstop Dansby Swanson to a seven-year deal and former 2019 National League Most Valuable Player Cody Bellinger to a one-year contract. While these were major hires, the team still had a need at first base, a void left by Anthony Rizzo since 2021.

It looks like the team is closing in on their first baseman, and no, it’s not Trey Mancini.

FanSided MLB insider Robert Murray has heard that former Kansas City Royals and San Diego Padres first baseman Eric Hosmer is talking with the Cubs, and a deal could be close.

Jon Heyman of the New York Post was the first to report that Hosmer was « on the radar » for the Cubs.

Cubs Rumors: Chicago chats with former 1B Eric Hosmer of the Royals and Padres.

Hosmer notably started his career with the Royals, where he showed his batting skills and, most importantly, his defensive skills at first base. During his seven years in Kansas City, Hosmer won four Gold Gloves. He also helped the Royals win the World Series in 2015, their second in franchise history.

In 2018, Hosmer signed a lucrative eight-year, $144 million contract with the Padres. He didn’t have the honors he had in Kansas City, but he featured strong numbers in the batting box. Last season, Hosmer was supposed to be part of the Juan Soto-Josh Bell trade from the Padres to the Washington Nationals, but he used his no-trade clause. He was eventually traded to the Boston Red Sox, and the Padres are paying most of the money still owed on his contract.

Hosmer opted into his contract with Boston for the 2023 season in early November, but was slated for a Dec. 16 assignment.

Between San Diego and Boston last season, Hosmer recorded a .268 batting average, .334 offense percentage, .382 slashing percentage, eight home runs, 44 RBIs and 102 hits in 104 games.
