Conmebol favors the re-election of Infantino at the head of Fifa

The executive committee of the South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) will support Gianni Infantino, current president of the International Football Federation (Fifa), with a view to his re-election in March 2023, the organization announced on Tuesday.

« After an exchange of views on the present and future of South American and world football, Infantino received the unanimous support of the member associations of Conmebol“, announced the South American Confederation on its website.

The Italian-Swiss leader, president of Fifa since 2016, had participated before the announcement in a meeting with the management of Conmebol.

Mr. Infantino went to the permanent headquarters of the organization in Luque, in the suburbs of Asuncion, accompanied by its leader, Alejandro Dominguez, after attending the inauguration of a center dedicated to women’s football built by the Paraguayan Football Federation.

Gianni Infantino will go to the 73rd FIFA Congress in March 2023 in Kigali, capital of Rwanda, to run for a third term as its head.

He took office in 2016 when Fifa was mired in a corruption scandal, better known as « FifaGate« .

This support from Conmebol comes after tense relations on the football planet linked to the exclusion of Russia from the 2022 World Cup and the biennial World Cup project.
