Coming from afar, Carles Gil is rewarded

New England Revolution midfielder Carles Gil received the title of most successful comeback in Major League Soccer (MLS) this season on Wednesday.

Gil had 18 assists, a Garber Tour top, and four goals to lead the « Revs » to the MLS overall title. Also among the finalists for the league’s MVP award, the 29-year-old had missed most of the 2020 campaign with a left heel injury.

His performances the following year brought New England up to 73 points; when he scored a goal or had an assist, his team were 12-1-3.

In the ballot conducted with journalists, current MLS players and members of technical teams, Gil garnered 15.20% of the vote. He beat Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez (Galaxy of Los Angeles) and Daniel Salloi (Sporting of Kansas City) who amassed 12.70% and 12.60% respectively.
