The Kraken baptizes its house

NHL’s all-new expansion team, the Seattle Kraken, will play their first game in their brand new home, Climate Pledge Arena, and in front of 17,100 fans on Saturday as they face the Vancouver Canucks (10 p.m. ET ; ESPN +, HULU, CBC, CITY, TVAS2, NHL LIVE). This will be the first meeting of the season for the new rivalry in the Pacific Northwest. The two towns are separated by only 225 km. “It’s a new rivalry between two very close cities,” said Canucks head coach Travis Green on The Chirp podcast with Daren Millard. “It’s a new arena, a new city, new fans. It will be interesting to go there for the first time, and probably every other opportunity thereafter. The Kraken (1-3-1) will try to bounce back after suffering two straight losses, 6-1 to the Philadelphia Flyers on Monday and 4-2 to the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday. This first game in Seattle will be the last of a six-game road trip to kick off the Canucks’ season. – William Douglas, NHL.com reporter

A preview of the Stanley Cup final?

The Tampa Bay Lightning and Colorado Avalanche were considered two of the most talented teams in the NHL at the start of the season. Although the two clubs struggled early in the season, they remain among the favorites, which is why one thinks that Saturday’s game could well be a preview of the Stanley Cup final next June. The Lightning (2-2-0) have averaged 4.25 goals per game this season and are still trying to find chemistry within their offensive depth. Even deprived of Nikita Kucherov, victim of a lower body injury, the Lightning top-6 remains one of the most formidable in the NHL. The Avalanche suffered three consecutive defeats (0-3-0), but were deprived of Nathan MacKinnon for part, he who was on the COVID-19 protocol, and Gabriel Landeskog, who served a two-game suspension. These fleeting difficulties should be only a vague memory once all 82 games of their season have been played, but we could well talk about this part of October 23 late in June. – Adam Kimelman, Deputy Editorial Director

The Panthers on a roll

The Florida Panthers are possibly the best team in the NHL right now. They have an immaculate 4-0-0 record, a first in franchise history, and they just beat the dreaded Avalanche 4-1 on Thursday. It was also the 300th NHL victory for Sergei Bobrovsky, which allowed him to be the third Russian goalkeeper to reach this plateau after Evgeni Nabokov (353) and Nikolai Khabibulin (333). He could continue to grow his record on Saturday as the Panthers visit the Philadelphia Flyers (7 p.m. ET; NBCSP, BSFL, ESPN +, NHL LIVE), but it won’t be an easy task. The Flyers have won their last two games, and have yet to suffer the loss in regulation this season (2-0-1). – Amalie Benjamin, NHL.com reporter
