Neuchâtel Xamax has perhaps done the hardest part of its mission to maintain the Challenge League. Uli Forte’s men went on to win 3-1 at Rapperswil-Jona, 5th in the Promotion League, in the first leg of the promotion/relegation play-off.
Xamax had prepared his move well and didn’t have time to doubt, quickly making the difference on Jona’s Grünfeld. The 1-0, signed Izer Aliu, fell in the 6th minute after a confused action in the 5 meters. And the mass was said when Danilo Del Toro scored 3-0 in the 25th.
St. Welsh largesse well exploited
The Neuchâtelois, who doubled the lead through Soumaila Bakayoko (19th), were able to take full advantage of the largesse of an unconvincing Saint-Gallen defense. Their goalkeeper Théo Guivarch still had to bow once, on a success from Dimitri Volkart in the 53rd.
However, this goal did not disturb the Xamaxiens, who were content to proceed with counterattacks in the 2nd half. Relegated to the Challenge League in August 2020, Neuchâtel Xamax FCS will not have much to fear on Saturday in the return match at La Maladière (7 p.m.) if it shows the same rigor as Wednesday.
