08:00 GMT: Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez has said Ousmane Dembele has been an ‘exemplary professional’ since taking over after reinstating the France striker following a stalemate over his contract renewal.
Dembele, 24, was mocked by Barca fans earlier this month when he was an unused substitute in the win over Atletico Madrid and again when he came off the bench against Napoli in the week last. Xavi then handed him his first start since January 12 at Valencia on Sunday despite the uncertainty surrounding his future at Camp Nou, with his contract this summer.
« He looks happy, » Xavi said at a press conference ahead of Thursday’s Europa League draw against Napoli at the Diego Armando Maradona stadium. “He is an exemplary professional. I haven’t had a single problem with him and I’ve heard all kinds of things. That he hasn’t been professional, that he doesn’t take care of himself… it’s the opposite. He is training well and he is positive around the group.
« For the rest, let’s see. His contract is at the end of the season and [what happens] depends on him and the club. All I can say is that he is a player that I really like. »
Dembele has so far turned down all renewal offers from Barca, leading to football director Mateu Alemany telling him to find a new club in January.
