Chara announces her retirement at the age of 45

Zdeno Chara will announce his retirement from the NHL on Tuesday.

The 45-year-old defenseman will sign a one-day contract with the Boston Bruins at TD Garden and end a 25-year career in which he had 680 points (209 goals, 471 assists) and maintained a differential of more -301 with the New York Islanders, Washington Capitals, Ottawa Senators and Bruins. He set the record for most games played by a defenseman in the NHL (1,652) to edge Chris Chelios’ mark on Feb. 25 in the Islanders’ 4-3 overtime loss to the San Jose Sharks.

« After 25 seasons of professional hockey, 1,680 regular season games, 200 Stanley Cup playoff games and hundreds of international games, I am proud to announce my decision to retire from the National Hockey League, » wrote Charlie on Instagram. In doing so, I am honored to return to TD Garden today to sign a one-day contract with the Boston Bruins and officially wrap up my career with the team that has meant so much to me and my family.
