CF Montreal pulls through in expansion draft


Charlotte FC carried out its draft process on Tuesday evening in view of the expansion which will see it see the light of day in Major League Soccer (MLS) for the 2022 season and in doing so, spared CF Montreal.

Thus, the players who will take charge of Charlotte are striker Orrin McKinze Gaines II (Austin FC) as well as defenders Anton Walkes (Atlanta United) and Joseph Mora (DC United).

Fullback Tristan Blackmon (Los Angeles FC) was also chosen by the newcomers, but they immediately traded him to the Vancouver Whitecaps in exchange for $350,000 in 2022 and $125,000 in 2023.

New York City FC forward Ismael Tajouri-Shradi suffered the same fate, taking over as LAFC manager for $400,000 in 2022.

The newcomers had the choice of selecting five players from teams on the circuit that had not been victims of the expansion that brought Austin FC to the Garber circuit, namely the Los Angeles Galaxy, Nashville SC, the Reds New York Bulls, Orlando City SC and San Jose Earthquakes.

The list of protected players from each formation was made public on Monday. During the selection session, the leaders of Charlotte FC had three minutes per choice.
