CF Montreal | MLS, « a great opportunity » for Ilias Iliadis

(Montreal) CF Montreal have faced several departures since the beginning of December, but they have also added young players to their squad, including midfielder Ilias Iliadis.

Just two months ago, Iliadis was in the B team of Greek giants Panathinaikos FC when an offer caught his eye. The 21-year-old Torontonian saw the opportunity to return home, after an exile of around eight years in Greece, and he terminated his contract at the beginning of December.

In an article published on December 20, the Sport24 media quoted that Iliadis had « requested the termination of his contract due to personal problems », but the young midfielder did not touch on the subject after the training of the Blue -white-black, Monday.

Never mind, Iliadis has accepted a two-year contract with CF Montreal, for 2023 and 2024, with two option years, for 2025 and 2026. He took part in his first training session last week and he thinks that MLS will be able to allow him to develop as a player.

“I was a free agent during the January transfer window and this deal happened. I felt like it was a great opportunity for me, he explained. For a young person like me, it’s a great platform to show what I can do. MLS has made great strides in recent years. That’s why it’s a step in the right direction for me. »

Upon his arrival, Iliadis was notably welcomed by goalkeeper James Pantemis, who is of Greek descent. The two players were able to chat during a day of testing in the gym. Since then, Iliadis has seen how united the group is and he has gotten to know his other teammates.

Iliadis, who describes himself as a dynamic midfielder capable of being effective both in attack and in defence, nevertheless knows that he will have to go through a period of adaptation with his new team – which itself must go through one with its new head coach, Hernan Losada.

It is a beautiful environment in which to find oneself. I don’t know much about the team’s style of play. I have some catching up to do, but I am convinced that the coach will give me all the details and that he will put me in a good situation.

Ilias Iliadis

Iliadis left a nice calling card on Monday, during a circular version of the “shuttle race”. He finished third in the second group, trailing only defenders Robert Thorkelsson and Milo Garvanian, CF Montreal’s second-round pick in the last MLS draft.

Iliadis admitted he had a small advantage because he had already played a few games with Panathinaikos FC and was already in good mid-season form, but he was still happy with his result.

“I am proud of my performance. I arrive here after playing the first half of the season. I think I’m in very good physical condition and it’s a great achievement to have finished third,” he said.

It will be very interesting to see his use this season within the Losada squad. The departures of Djordje Mihailovic and Ismaël Koné have created openings and persistent rumors are also sending midfielder Joaquin Torres elsewhere, with the Philadelphia Union.

Iliadis, however, has not set any goals for the next season.

“I have no expectations coming here. I just want to do my best and we’ll see what happens, » he said.
