Everything is going well for Los Angeles FC, but one of the only downsides seemed to be the contract of star Carlos Vela. Fans will be able to breathe a little, since the Mexican striker would have agreed for at least another year with the Major League Soccer (MLS) club.

On Wednesday, the Garber Tour website reported that Vela has agreed to a contract extension « at least for 2023 » and will still be a Designated Player. The present pact which bound him to the LAFC was to expire on June 30.

The 33-year-old has been one of MLS’s brightest stars since arriving in California in 2018. He won the Golden Boot in 2019, setting a record 34 goals. He has four goals to his name this season, and 61 in 93 career regular season games.

Vela has been slowed by injuries for the past two years, which has affected LAFC standings. Everything is back to normal in 2022, with the City of Angels club sitting atop the Western Conference after seven encounters.
