Undefeated co-leader in Serie A after six days, Atalanta Bergamo is gradually establishing itself as a safe bet in Italian football. After having made three podiums over the last four seasons, can the Orobici start dreaming of a first title in their rich history? More
Serie B champion in 2006 and 2011, Atalanta Bergamo was not necessarily part of the references in Italy. But for the past few years, the team located not far from Milan has been talking about it, in Serie A as in the Champions League. After a successful start this summer, she hopes to confirm her progress to aim even higher.
A stronghold in Italy for several seasons
Third in Serie A in 2019, 2020 and 2021, Atalanta Bergamo did not do as well last year with an eighth place. An honorable, but almost disappointing ranking for a team that managed to reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League in 2020 and then the eighth the following year. In 2019 as in 2021, the Orobici also managed to reach the final of the Italian Cup, without, unfortunately, managing to lift the trophy.
During the last summer transfer window, Atalanta lost two major players. Namely Cristian Romero, Argentinian central defender, who cost Tottenham 50 million euros after a successful stint on loan. And Swiss midfielder Remo Freuler, 30, who has also taken over the management of the English Premier League, signing at Nottingham Forest. And this after having played 260 matches under the colors of the formation based in Bergamo. A double loss which obviously did not disturb her unduly.
Atalanta starts well in Serie A, to go to the end?
In the other direction, Atalanta has strengthened itself by recruiting, for example, the Frenchman Brandon Soppy, formerly of Rennes, as a right-back. But also the central defender of Juventus Turin, Merih Demiral, who was first loaned. Brazilian midfielder Ederson. As well as an attacking trio made up of Jérémie Boga, a native of Marseille, Rasmus Höjlund and Ademola Lookman, who is coming off a season with 42 matches in all competitions with Leicester (8 goals, 6 assists). If we add the Ukrainian Malinovskyi, long coveted by OM this summer, and the very experienced Luis Muriel, we say that the offensive line of the bergamaschi has something to seduce.
After six days, Atalanta is co-leader of Italian Serie A. With a record of four wins, two draws and therefore no defeats. The best defense in the Championship (3 goals conceded) as well as an attack rather to his advantage (10 goals). This Sunday, the Bergamo club will pass a serious test on the lawn of Roma. But after hanging AC Milan last month (1-1), we say that the men of Gian Piero Gasperini have the means to annoy those of José Mourinho. With the obvious ambition not to keep the label of a simple summer tube.
