Can a big SUV beat a sports car?

Can an SUV as radical as the Porsche Cayenne GT beat a sports car like the Audi R8 in a straight line? Yes, but…

There is nothing more efficient than a sports car to develop the best possible performance. And for good reason, these machines are only designed for that. SUVs, on the other hand, have a heavier chassis that is much less optimized for sporty driving. This obviously does not prevent manufacturers like Porsche from performing miracles at this level, for example with the GT version of the Cayenne Coupé.

With 640 horsepower and a radicalized chassis, this Cayenne GT faces here the Audi R8 in its RWD version claiming 570 horsepower. On paper, the R8 is much more efficient in sporty driving. But in a straight line race from a standing start, there is a match thanks to the SUV’s four-wheel drive…

The R8 catches up once launched

Once launched, however, the R8 pushes harder than the Cayenne GT handicapped by its mass and its aerodynamics. Logic.
