Duje Caleta-Car returned to the episode of his transfer to Liverpool which was finally missed at the end of the transfer window. OM had blocked the Croatian defender who says he has no regrets. Although he believes that a transfer to the Reds would have been a big step for his career.
While OM are preparing to face Nice (Wednesday, 9 p.m.) in a late match for the 11th day of Ligue 1 in a particularly tense context at the club, Duje Caleta-Car was at a press conference on Tuesday. The Croatian returned his aborted transfer to Liverpool, at the end of the transfer window in January. The OM defender was preparing to take off for England in a private jet, when the Marseille club finally refused to release him. « I did receive an offer from Liverpool. I was very happy because they are a great club and it is an honor to know that such a club is asking me. It means my performance is good, » said he first declared.
« I do not regret »
« But with the club, we have decided that I will stay. Marseille is also a great club, which has given me a lot and I still have a lot of progress to make, » continued Duje Caleta-Car. « I do not regret not having left, because I already play for a big club », he insisted, before conceding: « It is true that leaving Liverpool would have been a big step forward for my career. But for now, I play for OM, I am concentrating on OM and we will see for the future « .
At the end of January, the Croatian international (10 caps) was in very advanced negotiations with the Reds, who have to deal with a hecatomb of injuries in defense in recent weeks. But OM felt they were unable to replace their player 24 hours from the end of the transfer window. The Marseille club has therefore ended its exchanges with the Reds.
Under contract until 2023, Caleta-Car arrived in Marseille in the summer of 2018 from Red Bull Salzburg for € 19 million. Today, it is estimated at 23 million euros by the specialized site Transfermarkt.
