In the warm atmosphere of the Palais des Sports, he caused a sensation. Lucas Veragheonly 21, delivered a very promising match on Friday September 30, 2022. The 1.97 meter winger showcased his speed, his technical qualities, his science of movement but also his address, despite first failed attempts , to score 14 points in the victory of the Caen BC on Andrezieux (99-77). We will have to reckon with the former Le Mans player, who trained with the professional team for the past two years but mainly played with the Espoirs.
Were you thinking of reacting to your first match lost in Mulhouse?
It’s clear. Collectively, we had shown a bad image of us against Mulhouse. The goal was really to make a good home appearance for our first game here. We followed the coach’s plans. Defensively, we made an impact so we got to the heart of the matter. We hope to keep this momentum for the next matches.
“A team with great potential”
Did the defense dictate your pace?
Yes. It is well known, when you put rhythm in defense, you also find dynamics in attack. We also knew how to find each other collectively. We finish with 32 assists, it’s a very good point. As we already said in pre-season, we are a team with great potential. If we manage to find each other, it can only go well.
Was it important to show things?
Ah yes, it was very important for the coach, for us too. We had to give a good image, make the supporters want to come and see us. You really had to respond. We did it.
How is a first match at the Palais des Sports when you arrive at the CBC?
Surprising. I who did the bench in Pro A, I was very surprised by the very good atmosphere in National 1 and especially in Caen. Playing at the Palais des Sports is a pleasure. I watched videos last season. The atmosphere was just crazy. We felt it through the screen. We also need that.
“A young player takes what he has to take”
How did you feel in this game?
I was good. I started badly in attack but I assume that if we are clumsy individually, we must look for other things to help the team. I put myself in a defensive role. I did not lose confidence and it went, I put my shots open.
What brought you to Caen?
The goal of the coach, first. When the coach told me about his ambition to go up to Pro B, it was something I was looking for. I didn’t want to go to N1 to play maintenance. Being surrounded by players who have a great career, such as Parfait Njiba, Carl Ona Embo, Moïse Diamé, Mounir Bernaoui, etc., is really important for the development of a young player.
Are you in Caen with a view to continuing your development?
That’s it. I didn’t necessarily want to have a lot of playing time. I knew that behind players like that, a young player takes what he has to take. I wanted to help the club achieve its goals. Afterwards, concerning me, it will come by itself. Whether I play ten minutes or thirty minutes, my service for the team will be the same.
How do you envision the future? At your age, all hopes are allowed…
Yes, all hopes are allowed. I want to make the best season possible collectively. If it follows individually, it will be perfect. If we manage to move up to Pro B, I hope that I will follow the club to Pro B. Going up with Caen would be a great satisfaction. It would be interesting to discover the Pro B. What I hope for the future is to play at the best possible level.
