BMW XM – The most powerful BMW M is a (very) large SUV with 653 hp

We’ve been waiting for it for some time now. Since the presentation of a concept prefiguring it in 2021. About a year later, the BMW XM becomes a production car, confirming a very personal style, its high technology and its 650 hp plug-in hybrid powertrain.

Production will begin in late 2022 at the Spartanburg, South Carolina plant. Prices will start at 160,000 euros.

653 horsepower… waiting for more!

Without further ado, let’s take a look at what’s going on in this XM. The big SUV’s plug-in hybrid powertrain consists of the 490hp 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 and a 197hp fifth-generation BMW eDrive electric unit (powered by a 25.7kWh battery installed in the floor) integrated into the 8-speed M Steptronic automatic transmission. Together, the two engines release 653 hp and 800 Nm of torque through the M xDrive all-wheel-drive system.

Thanks to four-wheel drive, the electric motor’s instant torque and Launch Control, the XM goes from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.1 seconds and reaches a top speed of 250 km/h (270 km/h with the M Driver’s).

In addition, in electric mode alone, the speed is limited to 140 km/h and it is possible to travel around 50 km. When it comes to charging, the M Hybrid system supports AC power up to 7.4 kW, which can go from 0 to 100 percent charge in just over three hours.

Performance, on the other hand, is set to become increasingly interesting. After the launch of the « normal » XM, BMW plans to unveil the special « Label » series. Shortly after the model launch in spring 2023, the Label Red with 745 hp and 997 Nm will be available. The production of these units is scheduled for the summer of 2023, the characteristics and equipment remaining to be defined.

racing mechanics

BMW’s mechanics will also be found in the racing cars that will take part in the IMSA North American championship in 2023 and the WEC championship in 2024. This means that this same plug-in hybrid (modified in several parts to unleash its full potential) will equip the single-seaters who will compete in iconic races such as the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Impossible to go unnoticed

The look of the BMW XM remained largely unchanged from the concept. The Munich firm has not abandoned its imposing forms, but trims and details have been added to make the exterior even more complete and personal.

This is evidenced by the golden frames which further emphasize the distinctive line of the windows and the wide diffuser, while the glossy black inserts reinforce the large hexagonal double kidney grille and give the wheel arches even more solidity.

We find the principle of the headlights destructured in two parts, as on the last X7 and Series 7, with two ultra-thin LEDs acting as position lights and indicators, while the larger headlights act as low beams.

At the rear, on the other hand, the headlights wrap around the sides of the car, while the laser-engraved BMW logo on the rear window confirms the great attention to detail.

The 23-inch alloy wheels in two-tone black and night gold also catch the eye. It is also possible to order 22-inch models with a special design intended to reduce weight and aerodynamic drag.

As for the colors, on the other hand, the BMW can be chosen in seven different colors, three of which are new among all M models and one signed by BMW Individual. The manufacturer, however, expects that by the summer of 2023 the paint catalog will be expanded to more than 50 individual colors.

A real living room

Despite its sporting vocation, on board the BMW XM does not renounce luxury and space. As standard, the mega SUV is configured in black individual Merino leather with Black Gray contrast stitching. Nappa leather, Alcantara and carbon fiber upholstery adds further refinement. Naturally, the most demanding customers have many possibilities for customization, both in terms of materials and colors.

The same care is given to the rear passengers, so much so that BMW calls the second row the « M Lounge » to emphasize passenger comfort and the quality of the upholstery.

The wow effect is ensured by the Alcantara roof lining studded with 100 LEDs which produce different animations depending on the driving mode or in certain situations, such as an incoming call on a Bluetooth-connected smartphone or to signal the risk of an accident. when the doors open.

The technology is the same as on the latest high-end BMWs, with the curved BMW display taking up much of the dashboard and providing access to the infotainment features of the Live Cockpit Professional. Here, the iDrive 8 operating system has been updated in terms of graphics and settings to fully adapt to the style of the Bavarian super SUV.

Finally, the standard safety equipment includes all BMW Driving Assistant devices, namely forward collision warning, lane departure warning, escape assistant and alternation assistant. If you choose the Driving Assistant Professional package, you also get Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go and Autonomous Steering and Lane Control Assistant functions.

Driving modes for all tastes

The center console panel allows you to switch « power mode » between Hybrid, Electric and eControl. The first manages the « dialogue » between the two motors, the second only uses the electric group (with a sound specially developed for the XM), while the third conserves the battery charge so that it can be used later , for example, when entering an urban area.

Different driving programs can be selected in hybrid mode, from Comfort mode (which optimizes fuel consumption and driving smoothness) to the more engaging Sport and Sport Plus modes, which put more emphasis on responsiveness and power. the car.

Speaking of customizable modes, the XM offers various functions for the M xDrive all-wheel-drive system.

The « M Setup » menu allows you to select the 4WD Sport and 4WD Sand programs, the former sending more power to the rear wheels, while the latter is designed for maximum grip on the most difficult surfaces. Even, the 4WD Sand system locks the M Sport rear differential, improving traction on the trickiest terrain like true off-roaders do.

Balanced like a real M

BMW says the XM benefits from a 50:50 weight balance on both axles and an advanced chassis designed for maximum ride comfort.

Indeed, the SUV is equipped as standard with the Adaptive M Professional suspension, the stiffness of which changes according to the driving mode. Another important element is the active ride comfort, which consists of a 48-volt electric motor installed inside the front and rear anti-roll bars.

In practice, the device « straightens out » the car when it negotiates a bend or hits a deep pothole, while minimizing body roll. The integral active steering, fitted for the first time on an M model, is also useful when cornering. On the XM, the rear wheels rotate in antiphase, which reduces the turning radius at low speeds and generally improves driving dynamics.
