Barcelona ‘will not be able to sign’ in January transfer window as director Jordi Cruyff says club ‘deserves one last hug’ with Lionel Messi for return while Pep Guardiola can ‘choose his own fate’

Barcelona sporting adviser Jordi Cruyff said the club were unable to sign players in January and discussed Lionel Messi and Pep Guardiola return rumours.

Cruyff, the son of Barca and footballing legend Johan, joined the Catalan club last year after the return of president Joan Laporta.

The new presidential reign began with the club being announced to be £1.2billion in debt, before financial maneuverings saw a rocky summer in the transfer market.

The club are now back at the top of La Liga and were starting to look revitalised, but an exit from the Champions League group stage dealt a worrying blow.

Much of Barcelona’s summer spending was based on deep runs in the lucrative competition, but after back-to-back early exits their spending for the current season appears to be over.

« At the moment we would not be able to sign on the winter market, » Cruyff said in an interview with RAC 1.

“It’s not about selling a single player, it’s more complicated than that. »

The Spanish giants have undergone huge changes in recent years, moving from managers, while losing key players such as Luis Suarez and more recently Gerard Pique.

More important than all those departures, however, was that of the club’s greatest ever player, Lionel Messi, who bid a tearful farewell in the summer of 2021 as financial constraints prevented him from signing a new contract.

Now at Paris Saint-Germain with a contract set to expire in the summer of 2023, Barca have been linked, despite strong reports that they are heading to MLS’s Inter Miami.

On Messi, Cruyff said: « There has to be an approach.

“It is clear that we miss the final hug between a huge club and a player. They both deserve it. »

He was also asked about a potential return for Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, who left the club after a trophy-laden four-year spell in 2012.

« There are very few coaches who have reached the level of being able to choose their destiny, » Cruyff said. “It is his case.

“Should he return to Barca? It will depend on the situation. »
