Badge: ‘Always special for Napoli to beat Juventus, 5-1 it’s crazy’

Lorenzo Insigne has been impressed with Napoli’s Scudetto charge this season and stressed that his new club Toronto FC « have very important plans » for him.

The 31-year-old Italian striker ended a long-standing association with the Partenopei last summer, leaving on a free transfer to sign a four-year deal with the MLS side. Insigne has done well in his first six months in Canada, scoring six goals and providing two assists in 12 appearances, working well under compatriot Federico Bernardeschi.

Speaking to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Insigne first spoke about Napoli’s thrilling win over Juventus and their latest outings.

« The 5-1 against Juventus is a crazy result, I applauded so much. For us Neapolitans it always has a special flavor to beat the Bianconeri, let alone like this.

“The elimination of the Coppa Italia was only an incident, we must not dramatize. Spalletti then knows perfectly which chords to strike with the players.

« I have to congratulate the coach and all the staff, because the physical condition is impressive, the Azzurri are going for it in double figures. With Sarri we were exciting, but we were missing a little something.

He praised Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen, who has been a key figure in Luciano Spalletti’s side this season, scoring 13 goals in 15 Serie A games.

« He is improving day by day and his potential is realizing. Spalletti brings out his unique characteristics such as athleticism in the aerial game and progression, coordination. I am really happy for Victor, he is a very good no one.

The 31-year-old highlighted Stanislav Lobotka’s incredible growth.

“If I had to find a surprise, I would say Lobotka, absolutely. He does crazy things. I have to be honest, when I was there he wasn’t the player he is now. This is another reason to be grateful to the coach.

He refused to touch Napoli’s chances of winning the Scudetto this year.

« It’s not me who will give my opinion, we have lived too much and I prefer to take refuge in superstition. But I’m the biggest fan, I follow them from afar and after every game I send congratulations to everyone.

Finally, Insigne discussed his happiness with Toronto FC and how things are going for him in Canada.

« Brilliant, better than I expected. Football is different, there is no obsessive search for victory, we always leave to applause no matter what, and the fans make us feel appreciated. I am much calmer.

“I had offers in Europe, but I preferred to move to Canada, although I do not consider it a drastic choice. I continue to do the work I love like I did when I was a kid.

« In MLS I am the most iconic player, and that fills me with pride, the club and the league have very important projects for me. When I think back to where I started, I feel really satisfied.
