That day, the team of Hearts of Oak FC (Accra) and that of Asante Kotoko (Kumasi) compete within the framework of the Ghanaian championship. Following a contentious goal by the Accra team, overflows took place in the stands of Kumasi supporters. The police tried to intervene to calm things down, causing thousands of supporters to flee, trapped by the closed stadium gates.
