Aston Villa vs Burnley is the sixth Premier League game to be called off this weekend

It is the sixth Premier League to be postponed this weekend, as the coronavirus continues to sweep through English football.

Both clubs have been hit by the virus over the past week, with Aston Villa shutting down their training ground for several days and Burnley confirming positive cases across their squad.

Villa has now confirmed that a number of players returned positive PCR tests on Saturday morning, preventing manager Steven Gerrard from fielding a squad.

It’s another big blow for Burnley, whose last Premier League game against Watford was also called off hours before kick-off.

They also saw their game against Tottenham postponed due to snow earlier in the season, meaning they have to find time to play three more games in what is left of their campaign.

A statement from the club reads: « Aston Villa can confirm that today’s Premier League game with Burnley has been postponed due to increased number of positive Covid-19 test results within our squad of players.

“The results of the PCR tests, which were carried out yesterday before training as well as the lateral flow tests, were received this morning and confirmed a further exhaustion of our playing team which had already been impacted for our trip to Norwich in the middle of the week.

“All those who test positive are now isolated in accordance with Premier League and government guidelines and protocols.

“The club are extremely sorry for the inconvenience caused to Burnley Football Club, both our own supporters and the Burnley fans who are due to attend the game, but have acted as quickly as possible this morning to minimize the disruption. «
