Despite a poor outing from new pitcher Jose Berrios Thursday night, the Toronto Blue Jays remain in the thick of the game to be among the two teams drafted into American League Baseball.
The heartbreaking defeat of the New York Yankees at the « field of dreams » helping, the Jays (62-52) will however have to do well during the current series of three games against the Seattle Mariners which continues until Sunday.
“Jose had no control over his fastball, so he had to fight continuously,” said Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo briefly on Thursday night after the 6-3 loss to the Los Angeles Angels.
“He still found a way to pitch more than four innings, which was huge to save our relievers,” Montoyo added of Berrios, as quoted on the Major League Baseball website.
In four and a third innings, the one that was acquired from the Minnesota Twins at the trade deadline, however, allowed six runs, all earned.
“I was lacking in control, especially with my fast pitch,” corroborated Berrios. When I fail to place this shot, my secondary throws don’t work well. It’s that type of night where you have to go and fight with each of your throws. I tried, I continued to give my 100% and I feel good about that. ”
Obviously, the good performance of Berrios will be crucial down the stretch for the Blue Jays. In his first two starts with the Toronto squad, the 27-year-old right-hander had allowed just one point in 12 innings overall.
Abraham Toro facing the Jays
Now, the current series against the Mariners (61-55), the first part of which was scheduled for late Friday night, notably features the Quebecer Abraham Toro.
Here’s another one that’s having a positive impact on his new team, Toro having been traded from the Houston Astros to the Mariners on July 27. Since arriving in Seattle, the Greenfield Park native has managed to hit the trails in each of his first 15 games with the Mariners. He thus maintains, in his new uniform, a batting average of .364 (20 in 55) and an attendance rate on goals of .444.
Mainly used in second cushion on defense, Toro hit five doubles and three homers under manager Scott Servais.
– In the race for drafted teams in the American, the Oakland Athletics and Boston Red Sox are tentatively in a position to make the playoff game. The Yankees, Blue Jays and Mariners follow in the standings.
