Alpine has identified the cause of Alonso’s fin breakage

At the end of a race where he fought for the last positions in the top 10, in particular in the context of muscular duels with the Alfa Romeos of Kimi Räikkönen and Antonio Giovinazzi, Fernando Alonso had to dismount at eight laps at the end of the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix. The Spaniard had indeed suffered a breakage of his rear wing, fortunately without causing any serious incident, since he was able to regain the races himself. low speed stands.

Two weeks later, interviewed during the press conference for the 2021 Mexico City Grand Prix and after analyzes carried out by Alpine to discover the cause, the two-time World Champion explained: « It was purely and simply a rear wing fatigue issue. We reinforced that part for the remaining races of the season and the lesson has been learned. »

In addition to the issue of the spoiler, the questions at the end of the Austin test for the two pilots of the French brand, Esteban Ocon having suffered from the same problems, related to the lack of performance of the A521 on the track of the Circuit of the Americas. Even if all the answers have not yet been found, the nature of the Texan track and the bumps are certainly not foreign to it.

« It is true that it was not our best race in terms of competitiveness », Alonso admitted this Thursday. “We’re still analyzing some things but probably the circuit setup and the bumps didn’t help our performance. I’m still analyzing other aspects as well. There are ups and downs. low for everyone in the season and it was probably one of the lowest for us, and hopefully we will be stronger here. «

Alpine is engaged in a battle for fifth place in the constructors’ standings against AlphaTauri. Enstone’s structure currently occupies this position but is only ten units ahead of Faenza’s firm with five races to go.
