Alexander Blessin leaves Ostend to join Zinho Vanheusden in Genoa

The German technician, who was elected coach of the year last season, will replace Andriy Shevchenko on the bench of the Vanheusden club. He will be replaced on that of the Belgian coast by his deputy Markus Pfanz. Before heading to Italy his name had circulated on the list of rumors of Standard and FC Bruges when they were looking for a new coach.

Alexander Blessin is leaving his post as coach of Ostend to become that of Italian club Genoa, the KVO said on Wednesday evening.

The 48-year-old German technician arrived in Ostend in June 2020, after eight years as coach of the RB Leipzig youth teams. He had signed up for two seasons, with an option for an additional year, but will not complete his contract. The KVO announced on Wednesday evening that it had reached an agreement with Genoa, the club of Zinho Vanheusden, who paid the severance package to the coastal club.

In Genoa, where he is committed until June 2024, Blessin replaces the Ukrainian Andriy Shevchenko, dismissed on Saturday, two months after his arrival. The 2004 Ballon d’Or had his first club coaching experience in Genoa after leading the Ukrainian team between 2016 and 2021. « It all happened so fast. This case was settled in 24 hours. I still can’t believe it », says Alexander Blessin, who has already flown to Italy on Wednesday evening. « As the transfer had not yet been finalized, I could not physically say goodbye to the players after training. I will probably contact them. I will also miss the fans. I could not refuse the offer from Genoa. They are a traditional club in Serie A and I have been offered a long-term project. It is a great step in my career but I will always be grateful to the KVO for giving me this chance. My family and I have always felt at home here and will miss everyone. I hope to be able to come back one day to be able to say goodbye in a proper way. » He is the deputy Markus Pflanz who will ensure the interim at the head of the coastal club, 15th in the D1A with 23 points.

The KVO will receive Antwerp on Friday at the start of the 23rd day of the championship. Genoa, a historic club in Italian football which won the first Italian championship in 1898, is currently 19th in Serie A with 12 points in 22 matches, six points behind the first non-relegation player, Venice (17th).
