Alain Vigneault fired by the Flyers


The Philadelphia Flyers fired coach Alain Vigneault and his assistant Michel Therrien on Monday.

The Quebec driver, who was in his third season behind the Flyers bench, will be replaced by Mike Yeo on an interim basis.

The Flyers (8-10-4) have lost their last eight games (0-6-2), with the most recent loss coming to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Sunday by a score of 7-1. They are visited by the Colorado Avalanche on Monday (7 p.m. ET; SN, TVAS, NBCSP +, ALT, ESPN +, NHL LIVE).

« We are counting on several players who take this to heart and we want to do well, » said the striker. James van riemsdyk Monday. We are working hard to make that happen. Offense has been a big problem for the Flyers. They’ve averaged 2.32 goals per game this season, ranking them 28th in the NHL. Their power play occupies the 30th rung with a performance of 13.4 percent. In their last eight games, the Flyers have been outscored 36-13 in the goals column, allowing 35.3 shots per game in that streak. Their power play only scored 2 goals in 22 attempts (9.1 percent).

Philadelphia has been playing without the services of multiple players since the start of the campaign. Kevin hayes missed the first 12 games and was injured again Nov. 16 against the Calgary Flames, in his second meeting of the season. Patrick brown was also injured against the Flames and is indefinitely sidelined. Derick Brassard should be on the sidelines for at least another week due to a lower body injury, while Nate thompson is on the injured list, he who suffered a shoulder separation on November 26.

Struggling with a lower body injury, the defender Ryan ellis has only played one game since October 20. He should be away for another month.

Ellis, who had five points (one goal, four assists) in four games, was one of the Flyers’ major acquisitions this offseason.

« These are just an apology, » commented Claude giroux November 26. Injury or not, those who are in training must give more and play better. « 

Vigneault, who was hired on April 15, 2019, has maintained a 74-54-19 record in three seasons at Philadelphia. The Flyers reached the second round of the 2020 Stanley Cup playoffs but failed to advance to the spring tournament last season.

The 60-year-old coach is 722-489-117 with 35 draws in 1,363 regular-season games at the helm of the Flyers, New York Rangers, Vancouver Canucks and Montreal Canadiens. He is ranked eighth in history for wins and 13th for games in the NHL. The Quebecer got his hands on the Jack-Adams Trophy in 2007 and was a finalist for Coach of the Year four times (2000, 2011, 2015, 2020). He’s 78-77 in 155 playoff games. He led the Canucks and Rangers to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2011 and 2014, respectively, but his team lost every opportunity.
