Egan Bernal sees himself racing the Tour de France again in 2022 after favoring the Giro this season, the Colombian announced in an interview with a newspaper in his country. « It is clear that we are going to focus all our preparation and our efforts in thinking of running the Tour de France this year.« , the 24-year-old winner of the 2019 edition told Mundo Ciclistico.
In 2020, Bernal was forced to retire during the Tour due to back pain. In 2021, the leader of the Ineos team focused on the Giro d’Italia, which he won for the first time. « It is time to return to the path of 2019, from which we have deviated a little », continued the only South American winner of the Tour.
Embarrassed by persistent back pain, the Colombian was reassuring, as the cycling world began its hibernation until mid-January. « I think I fully recovered, but nevertheless we followed the evolution through physiotherapy sessions, strengthening ourselves with sessions at the gym. We hope to start the cycling year and continue without anything affecting the performance on the bike « , revealed Bernal on a daily basis.
The 2022 edition could therefore offer the duel that the cycling world expects on the slopes of the Grande Boucle between Bernal and the two-time defending champion Tadej Pogacar, who for a time had the possibility of racing the Giro before the Tour, but should focus on a third crown in a row on the Champés-Elysées.
