A new film dedicated to Enzo Ferrari is coming

Enzo Ferrari’s life has been told over and over again in several books and a few TV movies, but never on the big screen. A void that will be filled in the coming months with the release of the film dedicated to « Commendatore », a feature film directed by Michael Mann.

The Ferrari founder will be played by Adam Driver (known for playing Kylo Ren in the latest Star Wars trilogy and Maurizio Gucci in « House of Gucci »), chosen to replace Hugh Jackman. Filming will begin in the spring of 2022 near Modena and in the Motor Valley, where Ferrari was born and still produces its cars today.

The film dedicated to Enzo Ferrari will be based on Brock Yatesnon’s book « Enzo Ferrari – The Man and the Machine » and will not cover the entire life of the Italian, but − as the synopsis specifies − will focus on the summer 1957. A particularly dark and difficult period for the founder of the Maranello firm, caught between economic difficulties with the risk of bankruptcy and personal tragedies, with the death of his son Dino in 1956 and his marriage to Laura Garello (played by Penelope Cruz).

These difficulties led Enzo Ferrari to « bet everything on one race, the Mille Miglia ». A triumphant and tragic edition at the same time, which saw the Ferraris occupy the three steps of the podium with the 315 S of Piero Taruffi and Wolfgang von Trips and the 250 GT Berlinetta of Olivier Gendebien, while the Ferrari 335 S n°531 d’Alfonso de Portago crashed into a telephone pole (due to a burst tire) after mowing down many spectators and causing the death of 10 of them, in addition to Alfonso de Portago and his co- pilot Edmund Nelson.

A tragic accident that went down in history as the « Tragedy of Guidizzolo » and that sounded the end of the « most beautiful race in the world ». The Mille Miglia then returned in 1977 as a regularity race reserved for historic models.

Michael Mann therefore returns to talk about the Italian firm after « Le Mans ’66 – The Great Challenge », a film devoted to the rivalry between Ferrari and Ford in which the American director was a producer, while the Italian Remo Girone played the role of ‘Enzo Ferrari.
