The idea came together a bit. The file submitted by the English, Scottish, Welsh, Northern Irish and Irish federations is the favorite in the race to obtain Euro 2028, which will be decided next September. Two other files have been sent to UEFA: that of Russia, whose teams are currently excluded from all competitions organized by the European football body because of the war in Ukraine, and that of Turkey.

According to the project presented on Wednesday, London’s Wembley stadium, where Italy was crowned European champion in July 2021 against England, would once again serve as a setting for a possible Euro-2028 in the British Isles, same as two other stadiums in the English capital: the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and the London Stadium, where the West Ham club plays. Etihad Stadium and Old Trafford Stadium in Manchester, Villa Park in Birmingham, St. James’ Park in Newcastle, Stadium of Light in Sunderland and a new stadium still under construction in Everton would be the other English the competition.
During the last Euro, the Italians were crowned at Wembley.
The bid committee is also proposing the Scottish stadium at Hampden Park in Glasgow: the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in Wales, Casement Park in Belfast (Northern Ireland) and two venues in Dublin, the Irish capital: Lansdowne Road and Croke Park. This list of 14 will be reduced to ten stages by April 2023, when the final application is submitted.
In a press release issued on Wednesday, the five associated federations highlight their experience in « the successful organization of major sporting events » which, they add, « means that we have the expertise and the experience necessary to carry this tournament world class to new heights ». They also insist on the means of transport and the accommodation capacities that already exist. England and Scotland hosted twelve of the 51 matches of the last Euro organized during the summer of 2021 in eleven different countries.
