A new era begins tomorrow as the Canadiens hold their golf tournament

The Montreal Canadiens golf tournament will be held tomorrow in Laval-sur-le-Lac. The charity event raised over $6.5 million for the Montreal Canadiens Children’s Foundation since 2000.

Beyond this great initiative, the tournament also marks the start of the team’s season. This is indeed the first event where the vast majority of players and team staff are present. Due to the pandemic, they could not be at the tournament last year and in 2020 it was canceled.

Obviously, the face of the team has changed greatly since 2019.

After the disappointing 2017-18 season that led to the selection of Jesperi Kotkaniemi, the team bounced back with a surprising campaign in 2018-19, as they fell just two points short of qualifying for the playoffs. Ryan Poehling added the icing on the cake by scoring a hat trick in the last game of the regular season.

In short, in the fall of 2019, a wind of hope blew over the troupe of Claude Julien. Led by the excellent trio of Tomas Tatar, Philip Danault and Brendan Gallagher, the organization wanted to build on their previous campaign and accelerate the reset started by Marc Bergevin.

But a lot of things have changed since then.

There was the pandemic, the final, but also the fall.

Bergevin and Julien were thanked and the alignment, rebuilt. Only nine of the 39 players who played a game with the team in 2019-20 are still with the organization.

Jeff Gorton, Kent Hughes and Martin St-Louis are now in charge and tomorrow’s tournament officially marks the start of their reign.

Lately, we’ve seen their plan for the future of the team form, but expect that picture to become increasingly clear in the coming months. Yes, it’s a rebuild, but the team’s future looks much brighter than in 2019.

But the tournament also marks the start of the hockey season. On Wednesday, rookie camp will begin and in the following days, the 2022 Rookie Tournament will take place in Buffalo. My colleague Mathis Therrien has just published a very detailed text on the subject:

Eventually, the real camp will also begin.

Then, from September 26, the CH will play eight preseason games and the regular season will begin on Wednesday, October 12 against the Maple Leafs.

So there is only one month left before the start of real hockey!
