A new designated player in Atlanta

Atlanta United FC have secured midfielder Marcelino Moreno through a transfer from Argentina’s Lanus and he will take up a designated player position, it was announced on Tuesday.

The 25-year-old is the sixth man in history to earn the privilege with the Georgia roster.

In the current formation, Ezequiel Barco and Josef Martinez are the others to assume the status of designated player. To this effect, Moreno will replace Gonzalo « Pity » Martinez, who joined Al-Nassr FC in Saudi Arabia.

« We’re happy to get our hands on someone of this level, » said team technical director Carlos Bocanegra on the Major League Soccer website. He is a dynamic attacking midfielder who has proven in Argentina that he is a consistently successful player. He has fantastic control and has the ability to change direction easily, while still being able to create games or allow others to be in the game. ”

The new Atlanta acquisition has played 106 games with Lanus. He made his professional debut in July 2016. On the attack front, his best harvest was in 2019-2020, a season in which he scored three goals and six assists in 20 games of the Superliga.

Atlanta is in trouble this year with a good 3-7-2 record for 12th in the Eastern Conference.
