In 1992, Peugeot won the first of its three victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans with the 905.

At the end of the 1980s, on the strength of its rally and rally-raid titles, Peugeot Sport decided to tackle endurance racing, and in particular the 24 Hours of Le Mans, still under the direction of Jean Todt. It must be said that the lion brand is already present indirectly in the Le Mans event through the team of its designer Gérard Welter whose prototypes use Peugeot mechanics, with success since his WM P88 broke a speed record by reaching 407 km/h in 1988. It was further to an agreement with Peugeot, which launched the 405, that this number was reduced to 405 km/h in official communications. In 1990, Peugeot presented its own Sport 3.5 category prototype: the 905.

A try, then victory

Two Peugeot 905s entered the 1991 24 Hours of Le Mans. The coupé was powered by a central-rear atmospheric V10. It proved to be efficient, but neither of the two cars made it to the finish. Victory goes to Mazda and its quadrotor-powered 787B, capable of singing even louder than the Frenchwoman.

In 1992, Peugeot returned with three 905s for the 60th edition of the 24 Hours. That of the Dalmas/Warwick/Blundell crew brings the lion its first victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The one led by the Jabouille/Alliot/Baldi trio, starting in pole position, climbed to the third step of the podium. The third, piloted by Ferté, van de Poele and Wendlinger, unfortunately did not see the finish. At that time, considered by many to be the golden age of endurance racing, competition was particularly fierce. Peugeot was able to win that year against Porsche, Toyota and Mazda in particular.
