24 Hours of Le Mans: a new BoP implemented

BoP for Balance of Performance, a system set up by the ACO and the FIA to level the performance of the various LMH and LMDh prototypes in the Hypercar category of the World Endurance Championship. While it was not planned to modify the BoP before the 24 Hours of Le Mans, it has nevertheless just evolved, which could, somewhat, benefit the Peugeot 9X8 LMH.
Following the first rounds of the FIA WEC World Endurance Championship, the international motorsport authorities and the ACO (Automobile Club de l’Ouest) therefore decided to modify the BoP, this a few days before the Test Day (4 June) of the 24 Hours of Le Mans 2023. Thus, the Toyota GR010 Hybrid LMH logically superior to the competition this season, take 37 kilos but, will have 4 additional MJ. The Ferrari 499P LMDh will also be heavier, at Le Mans, around 24 kilos with 2MJ more.
The Cadillac V-Series.R, also called or Cadillac V-LMDh, take 11 kilos and gain 1MJ. As for the Porsche 963 LMDh, they will be weighted by 3 kilos more. Below is the summary table of the BoP for the 24 Hours of Le Mans 2023. As you will be able to see, nothing has changed for the Peugeot 9X8 LMHs, the Glickenhaus 007 LMHs and the Vandervell 680 LMHs.
The BoP, which can also be defined as an equivalence of technologies, is decided via several very precise points (from left to right) on the table located above. Another important point to take into account is the fact that the Glickenhaus 007 and Vanwall Vandervell 680 are not hybrids, without an electric motor on the front axle. The Endurance Committee plays on the following technical points to establish the BoP:
- Minimum prototype weight (Kg)
- Maximum power (kW)
- Electrical system trigger speed (km/h)
- Maximum amount of energy released (MJ)
- Pit stop time during refueling phases in the pits
Finally, in photos in this article, the Peugeot 9X8s with Art Car type liveries for the centenary of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, take place in their pits.
