2022 World Qualifiers: three-month absence for Xhaka – rts.ch

Arsenal have confirmed Granit Xhaka’s knee injury. As the London club announce, the Swiss midfielder suffered a « serious injury to the internal ligament of the knee » against Tottenham on Sunday.

Xhaka avoids the operation, specifies his club. However, his absence will be long. As the club wrote, Xhaka should be able to return to the pitch within 3 months. For him, it is the most serious injury since a torn ligament at 16, when he played for the juniors of FC Basel.

Due to this new injury, Xhaka is expected to miss 4 World Cup qualifying matches with the national team. He will likely be absent against Northern Ireland (October 9), Lithuania (October 12), Italy (November 12) and Bulgaria (November 15).

This ligament injury punishes a failed start to the 2021-2022 season for the Balois, who started with 3 consecutive defeats in the Championship and an expulsion during the wide 0-5 setback against Manchester City. Corollary, Xhaka missed 2 matches for his club in the Premier League due to suspension. He then had to give up the Swiss team’s matches against Greece, Italy and Northern Ireland due to a Covid-19 infection.
