While he is at the heart of many controversies following the return match of the qualifying play-offs for the World Cup between Algeria and Cameroon, Bakary Gassama continues to enjoy the full confidence of the Confederation of African Football.
The governing body of African football has decided to once again appoint the Gambian to officiate a meeting of great importance on the continental level. After being chosen last month to lead the VAR of the quarter-final match of the most prestigious African competition, the Champions League, between Petro Luanda and Mamelodi Sundowns, the Gambian who drags pans will be the central referee of the semi -final return of the CAF Cup between Al Ahli Tripoli and Orlando Pirates, scheduled for May 15.
The appointment of this referee by the Referees Committee of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) is very surprising, especially since the Gambian referee is under fire from critics and is the subject of an investigation, after the play-off match of Mondial 2022 between the Fennecs and the Indomitable Lions.
Gassama is accused by the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) of favoring Cameroon.
But despite the filing of a complaint by the Algerian body with Fifa, CAF continues to turn a deaf ear and reiterate its confidence in this referee who should have been at least suspended as a precaution.
CAF’s decision risks playing a bad trick on the Algerians before the FIFA arbitration committee.
