2 dead in the attack during a cricket match in Afghanistan

During a Cricket match in Kabul, a grenade explosion killed two spectators.

Two spectators died in the explosion of a grenade Friday in a stadium where a cricket match was taking place in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, according to a new report given Saturday by the police.

Two spectators were killed, including « one died at the scene (of the explosion) and another later succumbed to his injuriesKabul police spokesman Khalid Zadran told AFP.

The latter had simply indicated on Friday that a « hand grenade exploded during Shpageeza League of Cricket“, in the international stadium of Kabul, without mentioning victims.

The head of the Afghan cricket federation, Naseeb Khan, had given him a toll of four injured spectators.

In a press release published on Friday, the UN humanitarian coordinator for Afghanistan, Ramiz Alakbarov, present at the stadium during the explosion, had denounced a “atrocious attack » and « the terrifying and sudden violence to which the Afghan population continues to be exposed« .

Since the Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan in August 2021, violence in the country has plummeted, but the jihadist group Islamic State has carried out several bombings and gun attacks in the country in recent months.

No group has so far claimed responsibility for Friday’s attack.

Several hundred people attended this match of a tournament which took place again for the first time since the Taliban came to power in Kabul last August.
