Barcelona have been one of the busiest clubs this summer, splashing money left and right to rebuild what could be one of the best in Europe. The Spanish club were hoping to close the Lionel Messi chapter this summer.

Despite the new players, including world-class striker Robert Lewandowski, Barcelona manager Xavi doesn’t believe the Spanish club are done mourning the loss of the Paris Saint-Germain striker.

For Xavi, it’s now about having players ready to be called up, without trying to replace the legacy left behind by Messi when he left La Liga in 2021.

“The mourning of the best in history will never end,” Xavi told reporters (h/t AS). “Everything he gave to Barça was extraordinary. Unfortunately, it’s over. Now there are others who are called to make a difference.

Depending on how circumstances develop during the UEFA Champions League group stage, Messi could return to Camp Nou as a member of PSG should both teams qualify for the knockout stages.

A return of Messi to Barcelona as a visitor would be the showpiece game that many in the footballing world will want to see and there will be plenty of shows around the world to discuss if it happens.
